Aldi summer food donations

Aldi is to donate over a million meals to charities over the school summer holidays, including more than 700,000 to causes supporting children.

The pledge is part of Aldi’s work with community scheme Neighbourly to donate surplus food from stores to local charities and food banks.

The school holiday push builds on a commitment made by Aldi in January to donate 10 million meals through Neighbourly this year. The discounter pledged to donate over 250,000 meals during the Easter school holidays.

“We’re proud to be supporting so many incredible causes up and down the country, helping them to donate meals to those in need this summer,” said Aldi MD of corporate responsibility Mary Dunn.

“The school holidays can be a hard time for families, particularly when many are experiencing heightened financial hardship due to the pandemic, and this is why we are committed to doing what we can to donate more meals than ever before.”

Neighbourly CEO Steve Butterworth said: “The summer school holidays are always one of the busiest times for the nation’s charities and food banks, but this year we’re expecting things to be even busier. Aldi’s donations have never been more of a vital support to these organisations.”

Aldi is one of a number of major grocers that work with Neighbourly to tackle food poverty by redistributing surplus food. Others include Lidl, M&S and Southern Co-op.
