Cadbury is set for a showdown with Galaxy and Bounty in vegan chocolate with its own range of plant-based bars.
The confectioner has created a duo of Cadbury Plant Bars, billed as the product of two years of development, which will roll out into retail from November.
The two flavours – Smooth Chocolate and Salted Caramel – use almond paste in the place of milk to provide “a similar taste and texture to milk ingredients while offering a hint of nuttiness”, said the brand (rsp: £2.50/80g).
It will face competition from Mars brands Galaxy, whose vegan spin-off launched in November 2019, as well as Bounty and Topic, which launched vegan versions in January 2021.
They will launch in 100% plant-based packaging made from International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) certified plastics from renewable sources. Cadbury is also currently investing in recycled soft plastic packs for Dairy Milk bars in the UK & Ireland.
“With 500,000 participants in this year’s Veganuary – double the number of participants from the year before – the increasing public appetite for varied snacking options and plant-based alternatives has never been more apparent,” said Mondelez UK MD Louise Stigant.
“Evolving consumer demands have long informed our ambition to provide a wide range of products that work for everyone and the new Cadbury Plant Bar range is the latest stop on this journey.”
Indeed, it’s the latest in a series of major extensions for the Cadbury brand over the last year in a bid to lure a wider range of shoppers to the brand.
Cadbury Nuttier, for instance, rolled out in December 2020, with Cadbury hoping to attract more health-conscious Brits, while Cadbury Caramilk, launched this summer, was targeted at millennials and young families.
